I'm tripping the light retarded happy, the incomparable Olivia Tremor Control are back with their first new music since 1999's Black Foliage: Animation Music Volume One, arguably the finest piece of psychedelia in the last 20 years. "The Game You Play is In Your Head, Parts 1, 2 & 3" sounds like an Olivia Tremor Control we haven't heard since way back in the early Elephant 6 era, with relatively few moving parts compared to the overwhelming swirl of Foliage.

None of which is to say that the track is a disappointment. While the sonic palette finds them closer to their humbler beginnings, Will Hart and company display melodic chops that their younger selves couldn't touch. All this has me practically frothing with anticipation for their set at FYF Fest this weekend. Hear the new song over at NPR.

Structurally, "Velvet Days" is near identical to the last Fungi Girls song I posted. The tempo's a little quicker, the hook is a little gnarlier, though the vocals haven't gotten any more energetic. But as Em once said, "Hey, here's a formula that works." This song is pretty cool, even if the video is a little "meh." It comes from their impending HoZac LP Some Easy Magic, which ceases to impend July 26.

Here Women are in highest form, showcasing their intricate guitar work and taking it to full-on prog territory before a mournful fadeout. For a while now, Long Beach's Wild Pack of Canaries have been my favorite band that I couldn't listen to. They totally floored me last summer when they played a little free gig with Stay Cool Forever at Joey's in Pomona, but until now they haven't had much in the way of polished recordings available. LBC contempos Mountain Man Records just released the band's first album, The Coroner Can Wait, a fantastic and improbable amalgam of most everything I love about indie rock. Inside you'll find satisfyingly weird songwriting built on latin rhythms coexisting uncomfortably with mathy breakdowns and an intangible carnival vibe. Also included: random horn sections, anthemic wailing, streams-of-(un)consciousness. Prog that's too punk to let you get away with calling it prog, and splits your lip, brain.

I couldn't have asked for a better treat after polishing off my last exam. This new Beach Fossils tune first appeared a little while ago in live form, and it was pretty great. The studio version, though, is a different animal entirely. If the band's early recordings had a workmanlike quality to them, here every note is rendered with an artist's brush. Every pristine guitar pluck shines out like an overexposed Polaroid, squiggling around in unexpected ways. I can't overemphasize the gorgeousness of the guitars on this song. It comes from an upcoming Captured Tracks EP, which has quickly jumped to the top of my most-wanted list.

Ever since Toro Y Moi dropped one of my favorite albums of the year, I've been eagerly awaiting a glimpse of his next release. Now that Underneath the Pine is just around the corner (2/22 on Carpark!), the waves of absurd anticipation break like a tropical storm over the rocks of the first promo .mp3. The rocks are smooth. If "Leave Everywhere" suggested a shift away from the soulful glitch-hop of his debut to a more organic pop sensibility, "Still Sound" bridges that gap and crafts its arrangements to work in service of da funk.

White Woods specializes in short, sweet foggy disco numbers with inventive vocal lines and huge crunchy synths that make for some sad dancing, but in a good way. When Daniel Trudeau (better known around these parts as Pregnant) took the stage at last week's Open Melody fest at UCI, I didn't know quite what to expect. Excited pre-show murmur among my friends was cautiously skeptical: The freaky/folky glitched-out brilliance found on tracks like "Uphill Divination" and "Liquidation on Swans" didn't seem to lend itself to the spartan guitar-plus-laptop setup. We had seen Panda at FYF. "I really hope this isn't wack," I said out loud.

Naturally, I was just being a huge dick as Mr. Trudeau turned in one of the most organic, crystalline-pure musical performances I've ever had the pleasure of witnessing. Having done their homework, the homies at TERROREYES capture the Pregnant live experience beautifully, emerging from this personal rabbit hole with some gorgeous footage from Pregnant HQ in Placerville, CA.

To counter this new cosmic threat, the stars aligned and brought forth an elemental force of weirdness in the form of Baltimore's own version of a Holy Ghost Party. I caught these dudes this past weekend at Acrobatics Everyday and was totally blown away by the tripped-out tropical/prog/psych-art-pop parade these two dudes were leading through the Cross-Cultural Center. Singer Dave's sick wig was apparently matched only by his generosity, and he hooked me up with the proverbial Business (a CD-R with their recent Prog Parents tape and newer material that they're currently shopping around).

Here we are at the tail-end of 2010. It's been like two years since "beach music" broke and Best Coast is collab'ing with Weezer, Dum Dum Girls are on Sub Pop, and Dustin Payseur's Beach Fossils still kick ass.

sad news: women cancel tour, might break up

Welcome back to Reasons I'm Cursed and Can Never Be Happy with I'm Into C.B.

On this week's episode, we take a look at a very distressing statement released by Flemish Eye concerning my favorite current indie rock band, Calgary's Women, and reflect on how I missed their show at the Echo two weeks ago for no goddamn reason.

With a heavy heart, we regret to say that the band Women is exhausted and are in need of a break from touring. They have experienced a lot of stress recently, and this culminated in a disastrous public conflict on Friday. Band members have been suffering from poor health, and are in near-exhaustion; as of today, all upcoming shows have been cancelled.

We feel that it's necessary to emphasize that this is a very difficult time for the band, and is not a trivial decision for a group that has spent as much time touring as they have. The band is a close-knit group of friends that have known each other since elementary school, and the personal health of these individuals forces this decision.

The band would appreciate some privacy as they sort things out and recover.

So Stay Cool Forever brought the mad jams to Acrobatics Everyday, as I'd expected. The chiller Christina was cool enough to tape it for anybody who wasn't able to catch the rainbow-tinted tornado that tore through UCI's storied Social Science Trailer 103 last Saturday. Check out "Zooey Zone" and "20 Pack'd," two tracks that've been conquering my bedroom in various forms for a year or so, and that'll both be appearing on their upcoming self-released album.

I'm kinda ridiculously in love with Portland's Orca Team. Hinting toward their particular corner of the Back to Mono sandbox, they never go for the obvious hook, instead weaving spare and reverby surf guitar around smart little counter-intuitive melodies and leaving frontman Leif Anders' rubberband bass to do most of the heavy lifting. Seriously, the prechorus is rocking one of the most insidious little chord changes this side of the Satyrs' 1968 nugget "Yesterday's Hero." Their 10-song debut is already out in cassette form from Vancouver's Eggy Records, but keep on the look out for the "Let it Go" 7'' popping up sometime in December on Happy Happy Birthday to Me, with "a full-length to follow in the Spring"!
